History of Palmer Ranch

Palmer Ranch in Sarasota is more than just a community. Its history dates back to that of the influential Bertha Honore Palmer. Bertha Palmer, a widow of the wealthy Potter Palmer of Chicago, made her way to Sarasota in 1910. Bertha was known for her exquisite hospitality and social standing; she was referred to as “The Queen of Chicago.”  After her husband’s passing, she saw an advertisement about the Sarasota Bay area in the newspaper. After visiting, she deemed Sarasota ‘The Most Beautiful Place in Florida’ and found herself purchasing over 80,000 acres of land.

Bertha purchased a home for herself on the little Sarasota Bay in Osprey, which today is known as The Oaks Club, one of Sarasota’s most prestigious communities. Bertha took an interest in gardening and agriculture. She brought new cattle to the area along with new flowers, fruits, and vegetables, experimenting the success of these on her land. Today, Bertha is known for influence among business, real estate, tourism, and the agriculture of Sarasota. After all, Sarasota was considered a ‘sleepy fishing village’, with only 900 residents and no electricity before her arrival. Her interest in the area sparked a real estate boom due to her social standing. After Bertha’s death, her sons, Honore and Potter, carried on a large influence in the Sarasota area as well.

Palmer Ranch is named after Bertha Palmer and her influence on the development of the Sarasota area. Palmer Ranch, which was once cattle land, is now a gorgeous residential community. You’ll find history embedded throughout Palmer Ranch, that honors Bertha Palmer. The main road that runs through Palmer Ranch, Honore, is Bertha’s maiden name. One of Bertha’s sons also carried the name Honore. Potter Park is named after both her husband and son, Potter. Throughout Palmer Ranch, you’ll find a focus on the beautiful grounds filled with palm trees, plants, and trees of various kinds, honoring her influence in agriculture.
