Tiny House

My daughter just celebrated her birthday and my wife convinced me to splurge and purchase her a house. Yes, a house, her very first home.  Not just any old house, trust me, we looked for a fixer upper… but at the end of the day we couldn’t find what we were looking for. So, we went the new construction route and purchased a brand-new home that had to be built from scratch. I AM a realtor, so I guess it's not THAT crazy to buy her a tiny house, right?

Little did I know that the project wasn’t over yet. My wife sent me out to Home Depot with a list of supplies we needed to “finish” the house. Not sure what more it needed, considering we bought it brand new! But, I obliged and came home to a full on renovation. Before I knew it, we were priming, painting, removing the sink, purchasing a new mailbox, landscaping, and more. Honestly, we had so much fun watching this house come to life. I really didn’t think it needed any work, but now that it’s done.. well, let’s just say it’s the cutest little tiny house on the block and my wife’s Pinterest dreams definitely came true. I should probably also clarify that my daughter is a toddler, and this tiny house... well, its a playhouse.

Check out our renovation from start to finish below!

Step One: Choose a Floorpan

We spent some time figuring out which house would be the best price for the square footage and durability. We chose a cedar house over some of the other wooden and plastic ones we looked at, due to its weather resistant properties. We landed on the Backyard Discovery Timberlake Playhouse and ended up purchasing it online through Walmart, which had the best rate compared to some other sites.

Step Two: Build

The box said this was a two-person job. I didn’t believe it, I mean, it’s a kid’s playhouse. How hard could it be? Well, it wasn’t hard, but it did help to have an extra hand when drilling a few of the pieces together. Total build time was about 2-3 hours. Directions were simple to follow and all the pieces were well labeled.

Step Three: Customize

We started this off with a coat of prime, and then used 2 coats of a white paint we already had in our garage. Added some black accents and finished it off with an outdoor sealant, to help it hold up in the sun and rain...since we plan to use it outside. Yeah, don’t do that. The sealant then turned the house a yellow tint…fail. So, our lesson was learned. Don’t try to save money by using paint you already have and then sealing it. Instead, just buy an outdoor paint with sealer already in it, it will make your life a lot easier.

Step Four: Decorate

We ordered and installed a mailbox off Amazon, spray painted the sink and stove, added flowers to the pots, and Viola! I also added a cleat I found around the house to the interior to hang a bucket or watering can on. Last, I added a lock to the door, well, because I broke the original one.  Between the paint and fun accents, it really came together. There’s a lot more you could add to this to make it interactive, creative, and fun for any kid. However, in the name of keeping the cost practical, we called it quits after these touches.
